The National Bank of Ukraine is still retaining the US dollar as the main exchange rate-forming currency, but is already seriously considering the possibility of switching to the euro.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This was stated by<\/a> the First Deputy Chairman of the NBU, Serhiy Nikolaychuk, in an interview with Interfax-Ukraine.<\/p>\n

“The dollar remains the key currency for the formation of the hryvnia exchange rate, and the focus on it is not going away at the moment,” Nikolaychuk said. However, due to Ukraine’s close integration with the European Union and strengthening economic ties, more and more external indicators will have to be reflected in euros.<\/p>\n

According to him, since the start of the full-scale war, Ukraine has significantly increased trade and financial relations with EU countries. “Most imports today come from Europe, and international aid is mainly in euros,” Nikolaychuk emphasized.<\/p>\n

These changes are already reflected in the structure of Ukraine’s international reserves – funds in euros accumulated by the government are included in the NBU’s reserves. The bank has also started publishing data not only in dollars, but also in euros and hryvnia.<\/p>\n

“There is no specific plan yet to switch to another exchange rate-setting currency, but we are actively studying the issue,” the deputy head of the NBU noted. In his opinion, for now, the dollar remains the only basis for exchange rate formation.<\/p>\n

Interestingly, this year, a weaker dollar on world markets has slightly strengthened the competitiveness of Ukrainian exports. However, significant changes in the trade balance due to exchange rate fluctuations are not expected yet.<\/p>\n

As a reminder, on September 3, the Verkhovna Rada adopted in the first reading draft law No. 10225-d, which regulates the circulation of virtual assets and defines the rules for their taxation.<\/a><\/p>\n

As reported, as of August 1, Ukraine’s international reserves amounted to $43.03 billion, which is 4.5% less than a month earlier.<\/a><\/p>\n
