After four years of full-scale war against Ukraine, the Kremlin has still failed to achieve its declared goals, including control of the Donetsk region.

There is little sense in dividing Russia’s offensive into seasonal phases. The Russian army continues to exert pressure on the positions of Ukraine’s defense forces. However, in August, the pace of advance into Ukrainian territory was half that of previous months, while the occupiers’ losses matched those suffered during their peak advance in November 2024. For comparison: in November 2024, Russian forces advanced roughly 750 square kilometers, while today their gains amount to no more than 300 square kilometers — at the cost of around 35,000 troops lost in just one month. These are colossal successes for Ukraine’s defense forces. At present, about 33% of the Donetsk region remains under Ukrainian control.

It is worth noting that the intensification of the Russian offensive in Donetsk coincided with the launch of negotiation processes, in particular, Putin’s meeting with the US President in Alaska. Moscow sought to demonstrate that political talks were pointless, as its army was allegedly capable of seizing the Donetsk region by force. This was the central goal of their offensive.

In reality, there was indeed a threat of a breakthrough into operational depth. Official data confirmed Russian advances of 10–12 kilometers. Reports circulated by the Bild publication — and picked up by Ukrainian media — of an 18-kilometer advance did not correspond to reality. Thanks to the efforts of Ukrainian troops, the situation was stabilized, and steps are now being taken to prevent any further enemy progress.

For Russia, this offensive carried not only political but also military significance. The Kremlin sought to capture key settlements, creating the threat of operational encirclement — not only in Pokrovsk but also around Myrnohrad and Dobropillia.

By deploying operational reserves, Ukraine managed to stabilize the front. The occupiers suffered heavy losses: more than a thousand soldiers were killed, and fifty were taken prisoner, indicating serious attrition among Russian forces.

A critical moment occurred during Ukrainian counterattacks, when part of the enemy’s assault groups became encircled. These units were effectively cut off from logistical support, evacuation of the wounded, and supplies of ammunition and food.

However, it should be emphasized that not only the Russian summer offensive, but the so-called special military operation (“SMO”) in general, has effectively failed.

After four years of active military operations, the Russians have not achieved even the intermediate goals of the so-called “SVO.” Its main objective — reaching the administrative borders of Donetsk region — remains unfulfilled. Therefore, discussing the failure of the Russian summer offensive in isolation, without acknowledging the overall fiasco of the entire SMO, is at least misleading.

It is also noteworthy that the occupying forces have begun to lose previously captured Ukrainian territories. A striking example: Russian media initially claimed that the Russian army had fully secured the territory of the so-called Luhansk People’s Republic (LPR), but by August 30, they reported that 99.7% of the LPR was under Russian control. The loss of even 0.3% of territory in two months underscores the success of Ukrainian counter-offensives. Consequently, it is inaccurate today to claim that the occupation forces control the entire Luhansk region. While there have been tactical gains in some areas, such as in the Lyman direction, the key measure remains Ukrainian control over the main industrial zones of the Donetsk region.

This is likely why the political leadership of the occupying country is circulating reports about so-called territorial exchanges — for example, trading parts of Sumy and Kharkiv regions for the withdrawal of Ukrainian Defense Forces from Donetsk.

As previously reported, the seasonal offensive of the occupation army failed. This is how the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine responded to claims by the occupiers of allegedly successful results in the spring-summer campaign of 2025.

The Russian offensive has failed: in August alone, more than 35,000 occupiers were lost, and the pace of advance halved compared to previous months.
