In Ukraine, taxi drivers who refuse to communicate with passengers in the state language will face fines ranging from 3,400 to 5,100 hryvnias, following a recent incident in Kharkiv where a driver rejected Ukrainian, played Russian music, and spread propaganda.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This was reported by the press service<\/a> of the Commissioner for the Protection of the State Language, Olena Ivanovska.<\/p>\n

Ivanovska noted that from now on, drivers who ignore the law requiring them to serve passengers in Ukrainian risk receiving an administrative penalty of 200 to 300 tax-free minimum incomes of citizens \u2014 that is, from 3,400 to 5,100 hryvnias.<\/p>\n

The trigger for stronger action was an incident in Kharkiv, where a taxi passenger was denied service in Ukraine. The driver not only rudely rejected the client\u2019s request but also turned on Russian music and repeated Kremlin propaganda narratives, in particular about the alleged “oppression of Russian speakers.” A video of the conflict was posted on social media and caused wide public outrage.<\/p>\n

“I have decided to initiate state control measures. In parallel, we are preparing an appeal to the National Police and the Security Service of Ukraine regarding the need for a response,” Ivanovska said, stressing that this driver “will not escape punishment.”<\/p>\n

She emphasized that Article 36 of the Law of Ukraine \u201cOn Ensuring the Functioning of the Ukrainian Language as the State Language\u201d<\/em> clearly stipulates that the language of service in transport must be Ukrainian. Accordingly, any refusal by a driver to provide services in the state language is a violation of language legislation.
\nOlena Ivanovska also called on taxi services to check the level of knowledge of the state language among drivers, to be more attentive to passenger complaints, and to promptly take response measures. At the same time, she reminded that such cases can be reported through a special electronic form<\/a> on the Commissioner’s website.<\/p>\n
