The deputy chairman of the ruling Slovak party Smer, Tibor Gaspar, caused a scandal in Slovakia by comparing Ukraine to the Hamas group and stating that the Russian invasion was “provoked.”<\/strong><\/p>\n

Gaspar emphasized that he supports the position of Prime Minister Robert Fico, who recognizes Russia’s attack on Ukraine as a violation of international law, but at the same time believes that the Kremlin had “reasons” for the invasion.<\/p>\n

“This is provoked aggression. Exactly the same as when terrorists from Palestine attacked Israel,” Gaspar said, drawing a parallel between Russia’s war against Ukraine and Hamas’s attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, when about 1,200 Israelis were killed.<\/p>\n

His words immediately provoked a reaction from the leader of the opposition Progressive Slovakia, Michal \u0160ime\u010dka, who also participated in the discussion. The politician sharply objected, reminding that it was Russia that invaded the territory of Ukraine, shelling peaceful cities and killing civilians.<\/p>\n

\u0160ime\u010dka also drew attention to the contradiction in the words of Smer representatives, because in 2022, Robert Fico himself voted for a parliamentary resolution that qualified Russia’s actions as “unprovoked aggression.”<\/p>\n
