Poland has officially requested consultations with its NATO allies under Article 4 of the North Atlantic Treaty. The move was prompted by a massive violation of the country’s airspace by Russian drones on the night of September 10. The Polish government called the incident a “more dangerous provocation” than any previous episode in recent years.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk stated<\/a> this during a speech in the Sejm, Polsat News reports.<\/p>\n

According to him, the appeal to Article 4 is already official, and the country expects not only political support, but also practical actions from its Alliance partners. “This is a confrontation that Russia is waging not only against Ukraine, but against the entire free world. Poland is not at war, but this provocation is much more serious than the previous ones,” he stressed.<\/p>\n

The Polish Prime Minister stressed that Warsaw highly values the manifestations of solidarity, but today this is not enough: the country needs decisive steps. He also warned that the threat of military conflict is now the greatest since the Second World War. According to him, the invasion of drones into Polish airspace is only part of a broader scenario, because in the coming days Russia and Belarus are to hold large-scale military exercises “West-2025” on the territory of Belarus.<\/p>\n

What is Article 4 of NATO?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Article 4 of the North Atlantic Treaty allows any NATO member state to initiate consultations with other members of the Alliance if it believes that its territorial integrity, political independence or security is threatened.<\/p>\n

“The Parties will consult together when, in the opinion of either of them, the territorial integrity, political independence or security of any of the Parties is threatened,” the text of the article states.<\/p>\n

Unlike Article 5, which provides for a collective military response to an attack, Article 4 is a political-diplomatic response tool. It has been invoked only seven times since NATO was founded in 1949. Poland has already invoked Article 4 in 2014 after Russia\u2019s annexation of Crimea, and in 2022 against the backdrop of Russia\u2019s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.<\/p>\n

This time, the Alliance also confirmed the activation of Article 4. According to Polish government spokesman Adam Szlapka, consultations under the article have already been held. According to him, the Allies understand the scale of the threat and are ready to discuss further actions within the framework of collective security.<\/p>\n

Recall, after a group of Russian drones penetrated the airspace of Poland, a NATO member state, a number of Western governments expressed solidarity and concern<\/a> . Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson condemned the violation of the Polish border by Russian drones, calling it an \u201cunacceptable act.\u201d Latvian President Edgars Rink\u0117vi\u010dius also issued a statement, emphasizing Poland\u2019s full support. In his opinion, such incidents indicate that the Russian Federation\u2019s war against Ukraine has direct consequences for the security of neighboring states.<\/p>\n

Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide described the situation as \u201cdeeply worrying,\u201d emphasizing that Norway stands shoulder to shoulder with Poland and other NATO allies.<\/p>\n

As reported, on the night of September 9-10, the situation in Eastern Europe escalated again – Russia launched a massive strike on the territory of Ukraine, while a number of enemy drones crossed the air border of Poland<\/a> . This forced Warsaw to activate air defense forces and engage aviation.<\/p>\n

It should be noted that last night 19 Russian drones violated Polish airspace<\/a> . Polish air defense forces were able to eliminate only four of them.<\/p>\n

It should be added that later , in addition to seven drones, a missile fragment was also found on Polish territory.<\/a><\/p>\n

By the way, on the morning of September 10 , Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk initiated an urgent government meeting due to an incident involving the violation of the country’s airspace by Russian drones.<\/a><\/p>\n

As is known, the night attack by Russian drones on the territory of Poland, which Warsaw called an \u201cunprecedented violation\u201d, was another step by the Kremlin on the path of escalation. It seems that this incident was carefully prepared long before the current phase: among the wreckage of the downed UAVs, found back in July, 4G modems with SIM cards of Polish and Lithuanian operators were found. This indicates that Russia was preparing for flights of its strike drones over the territories of these countries and testing the possibility of connecting them to local mobile networks.<\/a><\/p>\n
