During his visit to Strasbourg, former Ukrainian President and leader of \u201cEuropean Solidarity\u201d, Petro Poroshenko, met with European politicians, European Commission leaders, and members of the European Parliament.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cEveryone in Strasbourg is shocked by the massive missile and drone attacks on Ukraine, as well as by the audacity of the Putin regime\u2019s actions against Poland, aimed at testing transatlantic unity and NATO\u2019s resolve. The Alliance\u2019s response must be decisive and swift \u2014 this is our shared view. The address by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on Russia\u2019s drone attack against Poland and the overall situation in the EU was the key event that shook today\u2019s session of the European Parliament in Strasbourg,\u201d Poroshenko said.<\/p>\n

He discussed with David McAllister, Chairman of the European Parliament\u2019s Foreign Affairs Committee, the European Commission\u2019s new initiatives to support Ukraine\u2019s defense industry, the drone alliance, the use of frozen Russian assets, and the return of Ukrainian children abducted by Russia.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe also agreed to strengthen the role of the European Parliament\u2019s Foreign Affairs Committee in speeding up the launch of negotiations on Ukraine\u2019s accession to the European Union,\u201d Poroshenko said.<\/p>\n

During his meeting with EU Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos, the former president emphasized that Ukrainian society is united around the idea of a European future for Ukraine.<\/p>\n

\u201cMarta Kos coordinates the entire practical process of negotiations on Ukraine\u2019s accession to the EU and is well aware of both our strengths and our vulnerabilities. We discussed the situation at the front and the prospects for a peaceful settlement, recognizing that the recent massive shelling of Ukraine shows the Putin regime is not ready to end the war. In this context, we strongly condemned the missile strike on the village of Yarove in the Donetsk region, which claimed the lives of more than two dozen civilians,\u201d Poroshenko said<\/p>\n

\u201cWe agreed on the importance of strengthening internal unity in Ukraine as a guarantee of our stability. I emphasized that Ukrainian society is united around the idea of a European future. For millions of Ukrainians, membership in the European Union is not only a guarantee of security and prosperity but also a guarantee of the democratic development of our state. We agreed to maintain regular contacts to ensure a systematic process of Ukraine\u2019s integration into the EU,\u201d the party leader wrote.<\/p>\n

Poroshenko also reached an agreement with European People\u2019s Party President Manfred Weber on further coordination of strategy in support of Ukraine. The EPP has the largest group in the European Parliament, and Poroshenko\u2019s European Solidarity Party is an associate member.<\/p>\n

\u201cRussian terror against Ukrainians \u2014 especially the recent massive attacks on Ukrainian cities, government institutions, energy infrastructure, and the peaceful residents of Yarova, where 24 people were killed \u2014 must be stopped and met with a strong, coordinated response from the West. I thanked Mr. Weber for his personal leadership as EPP President in advancing the European Parliament resolution and honoring the memory of our colleague Andriy Parubiy,\u201d Poroshenko said.<\/p>\n

He added that the talks also covered the situation at the front, the status of negotiations to end the war, a shared vision of security guarantees for Ukraine and Europe, and possible new initiatives from the European People\u2019s Party.<\/p>\n

\u201cI urged our European partners to focus on the importance of securing guarantees for Ukraine\u2019s democratic development, particularly in the context of EU accession negotiations. We coordinated approaches to accelerating the EU Council\u2019s decision to open the \u2018Fundamentals\u2019 negotiation cluster for Ukraine and Moldova. This will help strengthen oversight by Ukrainian society and international partners over government actions in the areas of rule of law, justice, human rights, and the fight against corruption,\u201d the opposition leader emphasized.<\/p>\n

Poroshenko also thanked the Standing Rapporteur on Ukraine, MEP Michael Haller, for preparing a powerful European Parliament Resolution.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe time has come not only to develop a system of security guarantees, but also to focus on preparing and implementing a system of democratic guarantees. This is essential to strengthen the state\u2019s internal stability and unity, reinforce the rule of law and multi-party pluralism, and ensure freedom of speech and respect for human rights,\u201d Poroshenko emphasized.<\/p>\n

He stressed that such guarantees are also necessary for implementing effective anti-corruption policies and preventing selective or politically motivated justice.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is the foundation for improving the investment and business climate. It is critically important to open accession negotiations under the \u2018Foundations\u2019 cluster for Ukraine and Moldova as soon as possible. This would send a clear political signal of Europe\u2019s determination and the irreversibility of our countries\u2019 European path,\u201d the leader of European Solidarity<\/em> concluded.<\/p>\n
