Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that any peacekeeping contingents from EU countries on the territory of Ukraine “will be legitimate targets for the Russian Armed Forces” and that the deployment of Western troops within the country’s security guarantees will be regarded by the aggressor party as a de facto occupation.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This is reported by Russian media.<\/p>\n

In his statement, Lavrov emphasized that Moscow is categorically against providing Ukraine with security guarantees with the participation of European military contingents and believes that their appearance on Ukrainian territory will actually turn these territories into a bridgehead “conceived against the Russian Federation.”<\/p>\n

According to him, in this case, the West would supposedly “occupy Ukraine,” and accordingly, the troops that arrive there under the guise of peacekeepers would cease to be neutral actors and become “legitimate targets” for the Russian Armed Forces. Lavrov also added that due to such a position, the Europeans would have “nothing to do at the negotiating table regarding Ukraine.”<\/p>\n

Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin had already stated that if foreign troops appeared in the combat zone, these units could be targeted. So Lavrov’s current statement echoes the Kremlin’s previous rhetoric and looks like another warning to Kyiv’s international partners.<\/p>\n

It was previously reported thatone of the conditions for the deployment of European troops in Ukraine<\/a> is the provision of American intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance support.<\/p>\n
