Australia has joined a new wave of sanctions against Russia, lowering the price ceiling on Russian oil exports and expanding restrictions against the so-called “shadow fleet”.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This is stated<\/a> in an official statement from the Australian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.<\/p>\n

The upper limit on the price of Russian oil has now been reduced from $60 to $47.6 per barrel. This move is in line with measures recently taken by the UK, Canada, Japan and New Zealand as part of the 18th package of sanctions against Russia.<\/p>\n

“Reducing the marginal price is another step towards depriving the Russian military economy of super-profits from energy,” the Australian Foreign Ministry stressed.<\/p>\n

In addition, Australia is expanding the list of sanctions against Russian vessels. Another 95 tankers have been added to the list of restrictions, which are part of the “shadow fleet” engaged in illegal supplies of energy resources to circumvent sanctions. In total, 150 Russian vessels are now under Canberra’s sanctions.<\/p>\n

Similar restrictions have previously been introduced by the G7 countries and the European Union, with the aim of limiting Russia’s ability to finance a full-scale war against Ukraine through oil exports.<\/p>\n

As a reminder, on Friday, September 12, the UK government announced another expansion of sanctions against Russia.<\/a> The updated list added 30 new names and organizations, and introduced 70 new restrictions.<\/p>\n
