US lawmakers have prepared an initiative that would increase sanctions pressure on Russian oil tankers and other energy projects. The law aims to narrow Moscow’s war funding channels and tighten restrictions on Russia’s defense industry.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This is reported by<\/a> the Financial Times.<\/p>\n

The bill, which senators are working on, would significantly expand sanctions against the so-called “shadow fleet” – a flotilla of tankers used to secretly export Russian energy. The initiative will be introduced by Republican Jim Risch, chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, along with Democrat Jeanne Shaheen.<\/p>\n

If passed, the document would also affect Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG) projects and impose tougher restrictions on Russia’s defense sector, aiming to make it more expensive and difficult for Moscow to evade international sanctions and cut off sources of funding for the war.<\/p>\n

“Putin will use every means possible to evade US sanctions, and the US is taking tough action against this illegal ‘shadow fleet’ of vessels he uses to fund his war,” Risch said.<\/p>\n

The initiative has bipartisan support in the Senate and has received favorable reviews from influential lawmakers, including Trump allies Lindsey Graham and Tom Cotton. According to the authors, there is a broad consolidation of positions on the need to increase pressure on Moscow to make it feel the real consequences of aggression against Ukraine.<\/p>\n

If the bill passes both houses of Congress and is signed by the president, it will be another step in the campaign by the United States and its partners to internationally isolate and economically weaken Russia.<\/p>\n

It was previously reported that the Donald Trump administration is preparing a new package of restrictions against the Russian “shadow fleet”<\/a> of oil tankers.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Panama has introduced stricter ship registration rules to make it harder for the Russian fleet<\/a> to transport oil to circumvent sanctions.<\/p>\n
