Last Friday, three MiG-31 fighter jets illegally entered the airspace of NATO member Estonia, the latest in a series of provocations, including drone incidents over Poland and Romania.

Koffler believes such incidents are part of the Kremlin’s systematic strategy aimed at testing the limits of the alliance’s tolerance and gradually “blunting” the reaction of European countries to Moscow’s aggressive actions. However, the analyst emphasizes: this is not just a demonstration of force, but also a real danger of using nuclear weapons.

Last week, Russia held a large-scale Zapad-2025 exercise, during which a tactical nuclear strike scenario was practiced. Vladimir Putin personally observed the operations. According to Koffler, such actions indicate that the Kremlin views nuclear weapons not simply as a means of deterrence, but as a very likely tool for waging war.

In addition, the analyst draws attention to the lack of effective communication channels between Moscow and NATO structures. Combined with regular provocations and parallel military exercises on both sides, this creates a high risk of unintentional escalation.

Koffler compares the situation to the dangerous crisis of 1983, when during the Able Archer exercises, the world found itself on the brink of nuclear war due to the excessive suspicion of the USSR.

Against the backdrop of a full-scale war in Ukraine, growing distrust, and a lack of diplomatic tools, every mistake could have catastrophic consequences.

“We are on a very thin line. The probability of a fatal miscalculation is now higher than ever,” concludes Rebecca Koffler.

As a reminder, Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin said that Russia will deploy medium-range missiles and is abandoning the moratorium.

As previously reported, the American Institute for the Study of War reported that the Kremlin is deliberately creating the basis for breaking international arms control agreements, trying to prepare for a possible large-scale confrontation with NATO.

Also follow “Pryamim” on Facebook , Twitter , Telegram , and Instagram.

The threat level of nuclear escalation between Russia and the West has reached a critical level.
