A Paris criminal court has found former French President Nicolas Sarkozy guilty of criminal conspiracy related to the financing of his 2007 election campaign by the Libyan regime. The sentence is five years in prison, several of which are suspended, but the court decided to send the politician to prison, despite a possible appeal.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This is reported by<\/a> BFMTV, specifying that Sarkozy will receive a summons to the National Financial Prosecutor’s Office, which will set a date for the start of serving his sentence.<\/p>\n

The case concerns alleged secret agreements between Sarkozy and the regime of Muammar Gaddafi. According to the prosecution, the French politician could have received campaign funding from Libya in exchange for diplomatic support: in particular, assistance in Libya’s return to international politics and the acquittal of Gaddafi’s relative, Abdullah Senussi, who was sentenced to life imprisonment for his role in a 1989 terrorist attack that killed 170 people.<\/p>\n

The court found no direct evidence that Libyan funds had reached Sarkozy’s campaign headquarters in 2007, but the ex-president was found guilty of conspiracy charges.<\/p>\n

\u2696\ufe0f Result: severe sentence and political resonance<\/p>\n

The sentence was much harsher than observers had expected. As Reuters notes, even an appeal does not remove the need for imprisonment. Sarkozy himself denies all charges and calls the case politically motivated.<\/p>\n

Several people close to Sarkozy were also convicted in the Libyan financing case:<\/p>\n

Claude Gueant, a former presidential aide, was found guilty of forgery, abuse of influence, and bribery.<\/p>\n

Brice Ortefe, former minister, convicted of participating in a criminal conspiracy.<\/p>\n

Alexander Djuri, a businessman and intermediary in contacts with Libya, has been found guilty of active corruption.<\/p>\n

Bechir Saleh, Gaddafi’s chief of staff, received 5 years in prison.<\/p>\n

Eric Werth, the former treasurer of Sarkozy’s campaign headquarters, was acquitted.<\/p>\n

It should be noted that this is not the only case in which Sarkozy was convicted:<\/p>\n

In 2021, he was sentenced to three years (two suspended) for corruption and influence peddling.<\/p>\n

In 2024, he was found guilty of illegal campaign financing in 2012, exceeding the spending limit by almost double \u2014 43 million euros instead of the allowed 22.5 million.<\/p>\n

Sarkozy has already been serving a sentence with an electronic bracelet since February 2025 for the illegal wiretapping case. He plans to appeal this decision to the ECHR.<\/p>\n
