Dutch police have arrested two 17-year-olds on suspicion of spying for Russia for the first time. One of the boys was recruited by a pro-Russian hacker through the Telegram messenger, and investigators have obtained evidence of his attempts to collect information near the offices of Europol, Eurojust and the Canadian embassy in The Hague.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The arrests were reported to have taken place on September 22. Police detained two 17-year-old boys suspected of spying for Russia. This is likely the first case in the country where minors have been recruited by a foreign state.<\/p>\n

The father of one of the suspects said his son was recruited by a pro-Russian hacker on the Telegram messenger. In August of this year, the boy walked past the offices of Europol, Eurojust and the Canadian embassy in The Hague with a Wi-Fi sniffer, a device that monitors nearby networks and intercepts data.<\/p>\n

During a home search on September 22, eight men in balaclavas entered the teenager’s home, went straight to his room, and took the boy, the father said. Law enforcement officials only specified that the charges were “espionage” and “providing services to a foreign state.”<\/p>\n

The police chief would not comment on the case due to the young age of the suspects. One of the boys will remain in custody for another two weeks, the other will be under house arrest with an electronic bracelet.<\/p>\n

The suspect’s father describes him as a fanatical gamer who is well-versed in computers and enjoys hacking, but shows no desire to explore the world outside the home.<\/p>\n

The arrests were the result of an investigation by the Dutch intelligence service AIVD. The case has attracted particular attention from law enforcement due to the involvement of minors in espionage activities for a foreign state.<\/p>\n
