The current authorities should speak honestly with Ukrainian society and finally explain that in the event of a ceasefire, a significant part of Ukraine will remain under Russian occupation de facto, for decades or even generations, and it will be impossible to return these territories through diplomatic means alone.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This opinion was expressed<\/a> on the air of “Pryamoy” by Oleg Shamshur, a diplomat, former ambassador to the USA and France.<\/p>\n

“What we lack is an honest conversation between the authorities and society. And part of this honest conversation should be that in the event of a ceasefire, we must understand that this will lead to the de facto occupation of a significant part of Ukrainian territory by the Russian Federation. And this is not for one year, not for two, not for decades, perhaps for generations. And therefore I would not create illusions even that we will be able to return it by diplomatic means. Yes, we cannot win it back now, but to say that we will be able to do it using diplomatic means, even with some super diplomats, is very, very unlikely,” Shamshur noted.<\/p>\n
