Polish mountaineer Andrzej Bargel made history as the first person to climb and ski continuously from the world’s highest peak \u2013 Mount Everest \u2013 without the use of supplemental oxygen.<\/strong><\/p>\n

It is noted that the 37-year-old athlete made his third attempt to conquer Everest. The previous ones in 2019 and 2022 had to be interrupted due to dangerous weather conditions. This time, Bargel overcame all difficulties: it took him about 16 hours to pass the “death zone” at an altitude of more than 8,000 meters, where the oxygen level is critically low.<\/p>\n

“Skiing down Everest without oxygen is a dream that has lived in me for years,” the athlete said after returning to base camp.<\/p>\n

He said that he divided the route into two parts because the Khumbu Icefall, known for its danger, could only be traversed relatively safely in the morning.<\/p>\n

According to the Himalayan Base, more than 6,000 people worldwide have climbed Everest, but only about 200 have done so without supplemental oxygen. Several athletes have skied down the mountain, but this is the first time in history that this has been done without an oxygen tank.<\/p>\n

At the summit, climbers receive only a third of the oxygen they get at sea level, which can lead to brain damage, pulmonary edema, and even death. Despite these risks, Bargel made a continuous ski descent and arrived at base camp safely.<\/p>\n

The climber’s achievement has already been called “a groundbreaking milestone in the world of ski mountaineering.” Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk congratulated Bargel.<\/p>\n

“The sky is the limit? Not for Poles! Andrzej Bargel just skied down Mount Everest,” he wrote.<\/p>\n

This is not the athlete’s first achievement: in 2018, he became the first person to ski down the second highest peak in the world, K2.<\/p>\n

Recall that in April 2024, Ukrainian climber Iryna Galai, together with Nepalese guide Mingma, climbed Mount Annapurna<\/a> , whose height is 8091 meters above sea level. Annapurna is considered one of the most dangerous eight-thousanders in the world.<\/p>\n
