European Union leaders will gather in the Danish capital Copenhagen this week to agree on new defense projects. The central theme will be the creation of a “drone wall” and strengthening the defense of Europe’s eastern flank. The urgency of these steps has increased after a series of violations of NATO airspace by Russian targets.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The European Commission has prepared a special document proposing to close the gaps in the EU’s defense by 2030. The focus is on air and missile defense, as well as new technologies.<\/p>\n

“In light of the ongoing military aggression against Ukraine and the recent increase in the number of violations of the airspace of Member States, two flagship projects – the European drone wall and the protection of the eastern flank – require particular urgency and must be implemented promptly,” the document states.<\/p>\n

According to the publication, the “drone wall” will be based on Ukrainian experience and integrate startups and research centers into European defense hubs. The “Eastern Sentinel Service” project will cover ground defense, counter-drone means, naval and space components.<\/p>\n

Member states are calling for coalitions to respond together. Germany has already expressed its willingness to take the lead in air defense.<\/p>\n

“The financing will be partly provided by the \u20ac150 billion SAFE loan fund. Potential projects must be submitted by the end of November to qualify for these funds. Negotiations are also underway with the UK and Canada to provide non-EU countries with possible access to these funds. Japan and India may also be considered later,” the authors explain.<\/p>\n

The European Commission also proposes collective measures for European rearmament and coordination of procurement without duplicating NATO efforts. Progress in implementing the plans is planned to be monitored through annual reports.<\/p>\n

It should be noted that on Friday, September 26, several unidentified drones were spotted over the federal state of Schleswig-Holstein in northern Germany<\/a> . The region borders Denmark, where similar devices have been spotted three times this week. Local authorities have opened an official investigation into the incident.<\/p>\n

Earlier, Aalborg Airport in North Jutland was temporarily closed due to the appearance of drones<\/a> in the airspace, and on the night of September 23 , Gardermoen International Airport in the capital of Norway was also forced to suspend operations<\/a> after detecting unknown drones.<\/p>\n
