The European Union should begin negotiations this year on Ukraine and Moldova’s accession to the union.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This was stated by the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metzola, on October 2, before the start of the summit of the European political community in Copenhagen.<\/p>\n

According to her, the situation in Moldova confirms that the country has confidently chosen a pro-European course, despite Russia’s attempts to interfere in internal processes. “The people clearly voted for the path to Europe, and pressure from the Kremlin could not prevent this,” Metsola said.<\/p>\n

She recalled that Moldovan President Maia Sandu clearly articulated the EU membership benchmark during the election campaign. In this context, according to Metsola, the moment has come when it is necessary to move on to real steps: “We must start negotiations on the accession of Ukraine and Moldova by the end of this year.”<\/p>\n

The head of the European Parliament also stressed that the enlargement of the union is beneficial to all parties. This is not a gesture of charity, but a strategic interest for both the European Union and the candidate countries.<\/p>\n

“This will strengthen our security, strengthen political stability and show that the EU’s doors are open to those who truly seek to join,” she added.<\/p>\n

Let us remind you that Ukraine has fulfilled all conditions for protecting the rights of national minorities, which paves the way for the start of negotiations on accession to the European Union.<\/a><\/p>\n

As reported, the European Union plans to begin technical negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova regarding their future membership in the union<\/a> – even amid resistance from Hungary, which is currently blocking further progress.<\/p>\n
