The delivery is planned to be carried out via the Czech Republic.

This is reported by Ef.Syn.

According to preliminary data, the package includes, in particular, 60 units of M110A2 self-propelled guns and the following quantities of ammunition: 150 thousand shells in total, including 50 thousand M106 shells, 40 thousand M650 HERA, 30 thousand M404 ICM and 30 thousand M509A1 DPICM.

In addition, the kit will include thousands of 70 mm and 127 mm Zuni rockets. The weapons come from the Greek Army and Air Force reserves and will be transferred on an “as is” basis.

The total cost of the defense package is estimated at over 199 million euros. The Greek military leadership claims that the export will not affect the country’s defense capabilities, as compensatory funding is provided for the modernization of the existing arsenal. The final decision on the transfer is to be made by the Government National Security Council (KYSEA) chaired by the Prime Minister.

The M110A2 is an American 203 mm (8-inch) self-propelled howitzer designed to attack fortified positions, command posts, ammunition depots, and other strategic targets.

Key features:

Caliber: 203 mm;

Platform type: tracked self-propelled vehicle with a howitzer turret;

Crew: the specifications mention a large crew (up to ~13 people including support);

Weight: about 28–31 tons (depending on source and modification);

Engine/speed: diesel engine, maximum road speed ~50–55 km/h;

Firing range: standard shells — approximately 16.8–25 km; with rockets (RAP / HERA) — up to ~30 km;

Rate of fire: short-term 2–4 rounds per minute with a well-trained crew; standard rate — about 1 round every 2 minutes.

Features and applications:

M110A2 – an upgraded version of the basic M110 with an extended barrel (A2 modification) for increased range.

The system was created during the Cold War and has been actively used since the 1960s; since the early 2000s, it has been gradually phased out of many armies due to its outdated design and lack of automation.

The M110A2 is designed to deliver heavy, high-explosive charges — a single 203 mm shell can weigh over 100 kg and cause significant damage to fundamental targets.

Types of ammunition used with the M110/M110A2:

M106 is a high-explosive (HE) weapon.

M650 HERA — rocket-assist projectile for increased range.

M404 ICM / M509A1 DPICM — cumulative/submunition ammunition with submunitions (ICM / DPICM), designed to defeat armored vehicles and manpower. The M509A1 DPICM model can contain hundreds of submunitions in each projectile.

The M110A2 system is powerful in terms of striking effect, but has a number of disadvantages compared to modern self-propelled howitzers: low rate of fire, lack of modern loading/aiming automation, high weight and maintenance. Because of this, many countries have abandoned the M110 in favor of more modern systems.

The Zuni missiles are a family of 5-inch (127 mm) folding-fin air-to-ground non-destructive jet missiles (FFAR) developed in the United States in the 1950s. However, Athens is instead offering outdated weapons and is in no hurry to transfer key aircraft.

Also follow “Pryamim” on Facebook , Twitter , Telegram , and Instagram.

The Greek Ministry of National Defense is preparing a military aid package for Ukraine, which includes 60 M110A2 203 mm self-propelled howitzers, tens of thousands of shells and thousands of Zuni-type aircraft missiles.
