The administration of US President Donald Trump has launched a diplomatic campaign at the United Nations, urging allies to isolate Cuba over its involvement in the war against Ukraine. Washington is urging not to support an annual resolution to lift the embargo on Cuba, accusing Havana of sending its citizens to fight on the side of Russia.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The diplomatic cable indicates that American diplomats should convince partners not to vote for the resolution, arguing that Cuba actively supports the Russian invasion of Ukraine.<\/p>\n

According to the US, Havana is “the largest supplier of foreign military personnel to the Russian army after North Korea” \u2014 it is estimated that from 1,000 to 5,000 Cubans are participating in the fighting against Ukraine<\/strong> .<\/p>\n

The document emphasizes that Washington’s goal is to reduce the number of votes “for” the resolution, even if it is not possible to completely prevent its adoption. “Votes “against” are a priority, but abstentions or no vote are also useful,” the report says.<\/p>\n

Last year, 187 countries supported the document, with only the US and Israel opposing it, and Moldova abstaining. Washington believes that the resolution “falsely blames Cuba’s economic crisis on US sanctions,” when the real causes are “corruption and incompetence” of the Cuban leadership.<\/p>\n

The State Department also stated that Havana is using the UN vote to create an image of a victim, even though it itself is responsible for the participation of its citizens in Russia’s war against Ukraine.<\/p>\n

“The Cuban authorities have failed to protect their citizens from being used as pawns in Russia’s war against Ukraine,” the document states.<\/p>\n

Journalists recalled that only the US Congress can lift the embargo, which was introduced after the Cuban Revolution of 1959. At the same time, Havana accuses Washington of causing the deepest economic crisis in decades \u2014 with shortages of goods, destruction of infrastructure, and hyperinflation.<\/p>\n

According to the agency, Ukrainian officials have repeatedly informed the United States about the increasing scale of recruitment of Cuban mercenaries to participate in the war on the side of the Russian Federation, which became an additional argument for Washington in forming a new line of pressure on Cuba.<\/p>\n

It was previously reported that Kenyan authorities have arrested a man suspected of smuggling citizens of the country to Russia for further participation in the war against Ukraine.<\/a><\/p>\n
