The European Union has decided to tighten rules on the movement of Russian diplomats within the Schengen area. This was in response to a series of acts of sabotage, which, according to intelligence, were carried out by Russian special services agents acting under the cover of diplomatic status.<\/strong><\/p>\n

According to European intelligence agencies, Russian agents often disguise themselves as diplomats and use official business to coordinate intelligence operations outside the country of accreditation. One senior EU diplomat noted that such individuals are formally assigned to one country but carry out tasks in others, where their control is significantly more difficult for local counterintelligence structures.<\/p>\n

According to the innovations, Russian diplomats accredited in any EU member state are required to notify in advance of their intention to cross the internal Schengen borders. This step is part of the next package of sanctions that Brussels is preparing in response to Russia’s aggression against Ukraine.<\/p>\n

According to sources, the initiative was made possible after Hungary, which had long blocked it, abandoned its veto. However, the final approval of the restrictions may be delayed: Austria demands that a separate clause be added to the package that would lift the freeze on assets linked to businessman Oleg Deripaska. Vienna justifies its position by saying that this will help compensate for the losses of the Austrian bank Raiffeisen, which suffered losses in Russia.<\/p>\n

As a reminder, the Baltic countries, Northern Europe, and Poland plan to ban entry to the Schengen zone for Russian citizens who participated in the war against Ukraine<\/a> . The joint decision has already been approved by the interior ministers of the respective states.<\/p>\n

By the way, Hungary has officially banned entry to Robert Brovda (call sign “Magyar”), commander of the Unmanned Systems Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.<\/a> Budapest made this decision after an alleged attack by Ukrainian drones on the Druzhba oil pipeline, which supplies energy to Hungary.<\/p>\n
