The Nobel Committee announced the winners of the Physics Prize on Tuesday, October 7. This year’s winners are John Clarke, Michel Devoret, and John Martinis. These are three scientists whose experiments laid the foundation for modern quantum technologies.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This was reported by<\/a> the Nobel Foundation in H.<\/p>\n

The scientists were awarded “for their discovery of macroscopic quantum mechanical tunneling and energy quantization in an electrical circuit.” Their work proved that quantum phenomena, usually observed only at the level of elementary particles, can be reproduced in large-scale electrical systems large enough to be held in the hand.<\/p>\n

“These experiments have shown that even in a world of ordinary dimensions, quantum mechanics is able to manifest itself with all its paradoxes,” the Nobel Committee noted.<\/p>\n\t

The research, conducted in 1984-1985, was based on work with superconductors – materials that conduct current without resistance. The scientists created an electronic circuit that demonstrated the effect of quantum tunneling, when a system transitions from one state to another by “passing through” an energy barrier.<\/p>\n

In addition, they proved that such a system is quantized – that is, it can absorb or emit only certain portions of energy, as predicted by the theory of quantum mechanics.<\/p>\n

This discovery became the basis for a new era in physics – the development of quantum technologies, including quantum computers, sensors, and cryptography.<\/p>\n

“Today, these principles lie at the heart of cutting-edge research that is shaping the future of computing,” the Nobel Foundation said in a statement.<\/p>\n

As a reminder, the traditional Nobel Week began on October 6, 2025<\/a> – the period when Nobel Prize laureates in various fields of science and culture are announced. The Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet awarded the Prize in Medicine to Mary E. Brunkow, Fred Ramsdell, and Shimon Sakaguti for their discovery of the mechanisms of peripheral immune tolerance.<\/p>\n
