They were three prominent scientists: Japanese chemist Susumu Kitagawa, British researcher Richard Robson, and American Omar Yaghi.

This was reported by the press service of the Nobel Foundation.

The laureates were recognized for the creation and development of innovative metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) — unique molecular structures with large pores that can allow gases and other substances to pass through.

These materials have a wide range of applications: from extracting water from the air to containing toxic gases, capturing carbon dioxide, and even accelerating chemical reactions.

MOFs are crystalline structures in which metal ions serve as “building blocks” that combine with long organic molecules, resulting in porous crystals that can be tuned for specific tasks.

Thanks to the ability to change components, chemists obtain materials with different properties: they can selectively trap substances, conduct electricity, or catalyze reactions.

The first breakthrough in this field was made by Richard Robson in 1989, when he created a crystal of copper ions that resembled the structure of diamond but contained numerous cavities. Although the material was unstable at the time, this invention opened the way for new research.

Further improvements were made by Susumu Kitagawa and Omar Yaghi, who in the 1990s and 2000s showed that metal-organic frameworks could be flexible, stable, and controllable—that is, they could be designed with properties needed for different applications.

Currently, more than tens of thousands of types of MOFs are known, and their application helps solve global problems: purifying water from pollutants, decomposing drug residues in nature, absorbing harmful gases, and obtaining drinking water in the harshest conditions, even in deserts.

This technology opens up new horizons for chemistry and ecology, providing a powerful tool for tackling the challenges of our time.

As a reminder, on October 6, 2025, the traditional Nobel Week began – a series of official announcements of Nobel Prize laureates in various fields.

As reported, the Nobel Committee announced the winners of the Physics Prize on Tuesday, October 7. This year’s winners are John Clarke, Michel Devoret, and John Martinis.
