The European Union has developed a plan to gradually phase out oil and gas exports from Russia by January 2028.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This<\/span> was reported<\/span><\/a> by Reuters.<\/span><\/p>\n

As noted, the EU is negotiating to end purchases of Russian oil and gas, in an attempt to deprive the Kremlin of revenue to finance the war.<\/span><\/p>\n

In particular, during a closed meeting, EU diplomats agreed to submit the proposed law to their ministers for approval on October 20. This allowed overcoming the first political obstacle to making a decision.<\/span><\/p>\n

Diplomats said almost all European countries supported the plan, suggesting it would be easily adopted despite criticism from Hungary and Slovakia.<\/span><\/p>\n

Negotiations on technical changes will continue until October 20.<\/span><\/p>\n

However, another question has arisen among European officials: whether exporters of liquefied natural gas need to undergo prior authorization and have its origin checked by customs authorities upon arrival at EU ports to ensure that it is not Russian.<\/span><\/p>\n

France and Italy support the idea of prior authorization if EU authorities can ensure this process quickly, or if the gas needs to be checked upon arrival in Europe to ensure compliance with the ban.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIf approved, the law would end Europe\u2019s long-standing dependence on Russian oil and gas \u2013 phasing out Russian gas imports under new contracts from January 2026, then under existing short-term contracts from June 2026, and under long-term contracts from January 2028,\u201d the article says.<\/span><\/p>\n

In this way, Slovakia and Hungary will be faced with the need to develop a plan to abandon the Kremlin’s resources and find an alternative to them.<\/span><\/p>\n

At this stage, the support of EU member states is needed – at least 55% of them must approve the plan. After that, lawmakers will hold discussions on the final version of the law.<\/span><\/p>\n

As a reminder, the European Union seeks to abandon the purchase of Russian liquefied natural gas<\/a> earlier than planned within the framework of the 19th package of sanctions against Russia.<\/p>\n

Trump previously stated that he was ready to impose “serious sanctions” against Russia<\/a> , but would do so only if NATO member countries refused to buy Russian raw materials.<\/p>\n
