Her reappearance feels less like a reflection and more like a calculated attempt by the old German establishment to breathe life back into the fantasy of compromise with the Kremlin<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"0\" data-end=\"221\">Merkel said, verbatim: <em data-start=\"23\" data-end=\"219\">\u201cIn June 2021, I felt that Putin no longer accepted the Minsk agreements. I wanted a new format for negotiations, but the Baltic countries and Poland opposed it\u2026 Then I left, and the war began.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"223\" data-end=\"450\">Russian propagandists immediately pounced. <strong data-start=\"266\" data-end=\"274\">TASS<\/strong> ran the headline: <em data-start=\"293\" data-end=\"372\">\u201cMerkel accused Poland and the Baltics of disrupting agreements with Russia.\u201d<\/em> <strong data-start=\"373\" data-end=\"388\">RIA Novosti<\/strong> added: <em data-start=\"396\" data-end=\"448\">\u201cPoland and the Baltics did not give Putin peace.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"452\" data-end=\"547\">Classic Kremlin logic: it\u2019s not Moscow that\u2019s to blame \u2014 it\u2019s those who refused to surrender.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"549\" data-end=\"710\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">Europe\u2019s response was swift.<br data-start=\"577\" data-end=\"580\" \/>Polish Foreign Minister <strong data-start=\"604\" data-end=\"625\">Rados\u0142aw Sikorski<\/strong> shot back: <em data-start=\"637\" data-end=\"710\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">\u201cThat\u2019s about as true as saying we didn\u2019t protest against Nord Stream.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\t\t<aside class=\"shortcode-also\" data-title=\"Read also\" >\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/prm.ua\/en\/unexpected-conclusion-merkel-linked-the-covid-19-pandemic-to-the-start-of-putin-s-invasion-of-ukraine\/\">\u201cUnexpected conclusion\u201d: Merkel linked the COVID-19 pandemic to the start of Putin\u2019s invasion of Ukraine<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\n<p data-start=\"0\" data-end=\"161\">Estonian MP <strong data-start=\"12\" data-end=\"31\">Marko Mihkelson<\/strong> was blunt: <em data-start=\"43\" data-end=\"159\">\u201cMerkel has reached a new low \u2014 she\u2019d do better to remember Bucharest 2008, when she blocked the MAP for Ukraine.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"163\" data-end=\"271\">Former Lithuanian Foreign Minister <strong data-start=\"198\" data-end=\"219\">Linas Linkevi\u010dius<\/strong> put it even shorter: <em data-start=\"241\" data-end=\"269\">\u201cSilence would be golden.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"273\" data-end=\"481\">The Belgian center-right outlet <strong data-start=\"305\" data-end=\"324\">Brussels Signal<\/strong> summed it up dryly: <em data-start=\"345\" data-end=\"479\">\u201cThe former chancellor is trying to justify her own mistakes by shifting the blame onto her neighbors \u2014 who turned out to be right.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"483\" data-end=\"542\">The real question is: <strong data-start=\"505\" data-end=\"540\">why now, and who \u201cunfroze\u201d her?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"544\" data-end=\"578\">There are three likely versions:<\/p>\n<ol data-start=\"579\" data-end=\"912\">\n<li data-start=\"579\" data-end=\"666\">\n<p data-start=\"582\" data-end=\"666\"><strong data-start=\"582\" data-end=\"597\">The Kremlin<\/strong>, which needs \u201cWestern lawyers\u201d ahead of the U.S. and EU elections.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"667\" data-end=\"771\">\n<p data-start=\"670\" data-end=\"771\"><strong data-start=\"670\" data-end=\"686\">Viktor Orb\u00e1n<\/strong>, to whom Merkel curtsied in the same interview \u2014 <em data-start=\"736\" data-end=\"769\">\u201cNo, he\u2019s not a Russian agent.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"772\" data-end=\"912\">\n<p data-start=\"775\" data-end=\"912\"><strong data-start=\"775\" data-end=\"807\">The old German establishment<\/strong>, desperate to prevent history from branding <em data-start=\"852\" data-end=\"865\">Nord Stream<\/em> as the geopolitical disaster of the century.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p data-start=\"914\" data-end=\"1079\">Merkel can keep talking about \u201cmissed opportunities for dialogue,\u201d but the facts are merciless: it was her era that gave Putin both <strong data-start=\"1046\" data-end=\"1064\">time and money<\/strong> to wage war.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1081\" data-end=\"1297\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">Now that the Kremlin applauds her every word, Europe should drop its nostalgia for the \u201cgood old days\u201d and face a colder truth: <strong data-start=\"1209\" data-end=\"1297\" data-is-last-node=\"\">the Stasi never vanished \u2014 it merely learned to speak less.
