When Angela Merkel suddenly resurfaces after years of silence, lamenting that Poland and the Baltic States “didn\u2019t let us reach an agreement with Putin,” it\u2019s not nostalgia \u2014 it\u2019s choreography. Her reappearance feels less like a reflection and more like a calculated attempt by the old German establishment to breathe life back into the fantasy of compromise with the Kremlin<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Merkel said, verbatim: \u201cIn June 2021, I felt that Putin no longer accepted the Minsk agreements. I wanted a new format for negotiations, but the Baltic countries and Poland opposed it\u2026 Then I left, and the war began.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Russian propagandists immediately pounced. TASS<\/strong> ran the headline: \u201cMerkel accused Poland and the Baltics of disrupting agreements with Russia.\u201d<\/em> RIA Novosti<\/strong> added: \u201cPoland and the Baltics did not give Putin peace.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Classic Kremlin logic: it\u2019s not Moscow that\u2019s to blame \u2014 it\u2019s those who refused to surrender.<\/p>\n

Europe\u2019s response was swift.
Polish Foreign Minister Rados\u0142aw Sikorski<\/strong> shot back: \u201cThat\u2019s about as true as saying we didn\u2019t protest against Nord Stream.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\t\t
