NATO is discussing a more decisive response to Russia’s provocative actions, including the possibility of deploying strike drones near the Russian border and changing the rules for opening fire on Russian aircraft.<\/strong><\/p>\n

As reported by<\/a> the Financial Times, this refers to a potential lowering of the threshold for responding to air threats from Moscow and clearer measures in response to its hybrid campaigns.<\/p>\n

The initiative for a tougher policy originated among the states that directly border Russia. They received support from France and the United Kingdom. Over time, the discussion has become broader, covering most of NATO’s 32 member states. The focus of the discussions is the increasing number of incidents involving Russian aircraft and drones violating the airspace of the Alliance countries.<\/p>\n

According to sources, the allies are considering the possibility of transferring some drones from reconnaissance mode to combat, as well as changing the rules of engagement \u2014 in particular, allowing pilots to open fire not only after visual confirmation of a threat, but also based on radar data or a preliminary assessment of the situation. Another possible step is to conduct NATO exercises directly near the Russian border, especially in regions where defenses are less fortified.<\/p>\n

There are different positions among the Allies on further actions. Some call for more active countermeasures as a tool to deter aggression, others warn of the danger of a direct confrontation with a nuclear power. At the same time, there is a growing understanding that Moscow is gradually expanding its arsenal of pressure tools on NATO border countries, and the response to this must be coordinated.<\/p>\n

The Alliance does not officially comment on the progress of the negotiations, but it is known that urgent consultations were held twice last month after incidents in Poland and Estonia. The Eastern Sentry mission was also activated to strengthen air defenses of states located near Russia.<\/p>\n

As reported, on the evening of October 2 , the appearance of unknown drones was recorded near one of the largest airports in Europe, Munich.<\/a> Due to the threat of an air incident, the airport temporarily suspended operations.<\/p>\n

As a reminder, on Monday, October 6, unidentified drones were spotted over the Norwegian capital, causing Oslo Airport to temporarily suspend operations in the morning.<\/a><\/p>\n

It should be noted that during a public speech at a meeting of the Valdai Discussion Club, Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin commented on information about unknown drones that were recently spotted near critical infrastructure facilities in Europe, in particular, in Denmark.<\/a><\/p>\n
