Ukrainian journalist Viktoria Roshchina, who was tortured by the occupiers and died in Russian captivity in September 2024, has posthumously become one of the laureates of the international “Hero of Press Freedom” award. The award is awarded by the International Press Institute (IPI) jointly with the International Media Organization (IMS).<\/strong><\/p>\n

As stated<\/a> on the official IPI website, this award honors journalists who have shown unwavering commitment to freedom of expression. In the case of Viktoria Roshchina, the organizers emphasized that her death was an example of the harsh treatment of Ukrainian media workers who are illegally detained by the Russian authorities.<\/p>\n

“Roshchyna’s death in Russian captivity on September 19, 2024, has shed light on the ill-treatment suffered by dozens of Ukrainian journalists unjustly held by Russian authorities, and has added new urgency to the need to protect the press and ensure accountability for attacks on journalists. By naming Roschyna a World Press Freedom Heroine, IPI and IMS recognize the enormous personal sacrifice she made in her quest for information and the stories that need to be told,” the statement said.<\/p>\n

The award ceremony will take place on October 24 in Vienna as part of the IPI World Congress, dedicated to the organization’s 75th anniversary.<\/p>\n

“Each of this year’s Press Freedom Hero laureates faced serious dangers and threats simply for doing their work. Two of them – Viktoria Roshchina and Mariam Abu Dagga – paid for it with their lives,” the IPI emphasized.<\/p>\n

The 2025 laureates were:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Viktoriya Roshchina<\/strong> (posthumously), Ukraine – journalist who died in captivity in the Russian Federation on September 19, 2024,<\/p>\n

Mzia Amaglobeli<\/strong> (Georgia) – co-founder of independent media outlets “Batumelebi” and “Netgazeti”, sentenced in August 2025 to two years in prison,<\/p>\n

Martin Baron<\/strong> (USA) – former editor-in-chief of The Washington Post and The Boston Globe,<\/p>\n

Mariam Abu Dagga<\/strong> (Palestine) – photojournalist who died on August 25, 2025, as a result of shelling in the Gaza Strip,<\/p>\n

Gustavo Gorriti<\/strong> (Peru) – editor-in-chief of IDL-Reporteros media,<\/p>\n

Jimmy Lai<\/strong> (Hong Kong) – founder of Apple Daily,<\/p>\n

Tesfalem Valdez<\/strong> (Ethiopia) is the editor of Ethiopia Insider.<\/p>\n

As a reminder, in April, the body of journalist Viktoria Roshchina<\/a> , who died in Russian captivity in the fall of 2024, was returned to Ukraine<\/a> .<\/p>\n

Earlier, in October 2024, the representative of the Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War, Petr Yatsenko, reported that Ukrainian journalist Viktoria Roshchina, who was planned to be exchanged, died in Russian captivity<\/a> .<\/p>\n
