He said that the Alliance’s strikes would destroy key Russian military facilities – including in Kaliningrad and Sevastopol – within hours of the conflict.

The general spoke about this in an interview with the “Vot Tak” project, emphasizing that such a scenario cannot be compared to the war that Russia is waging against Ukraine.

“Imagine that in 2025 Russia attacks Poland according to the same pattern as Ukraine. NATO will respond immediately. The Alliance’s aviation and ground forces will destroy its troops,” Hodges explained. “Kaliningrad will be eliminated within the first hours – there will be nothing left there. All Russian military facilities in this enclave will be wiped out. The same applies to Sevastopol. The Russian military bases there will also not survive the first hours of hostilities.”

He emphasized that Russia has no chance in a direct confrontation with NATO, and therefore comparing such scenarios with the Ukrainian case is inappropriate.

The general specifically mentioned 2014, the beginning of the war in Ukraine. According to him, at that time Western Europe, the United States, and Canada generally supported Kyiv, but at the same time, many states remained too economically tied to Russian energy resources.

“Many people said then: ‘Don’t exaggerate. Russia is a serious state, it has nuclear weapons.’ And we were unable to give a clear signal that the Kremlin would be held accountable for its aggression. The Minsk agreements were a blank piece of paper. Sanctions did not produce results – Russia simply ignored them,” Hodges noted.

According to the American general, at the very beginning of the full-scale invasion in 2022, NATO should have taken a tougher position – openly declaring that the West’s goal is to restore full control of Ukraine over its internationally recognized territories and to give the Armed Forces of Ukraine all the necessary resources to do so.

“If this had been declared from the very beginning as a common strategic goal — to liberate all of Ukrainian territory, to provide everything necessary — the situation would look completely different now. Ukraine would be in a better position,” Hodges is convinced.

However, according to him, Western capitals have wasted years of time on fruitless discussions about whether Russia could use nuclear weapons, whether it was worth negotiating, and whether the Kremlin could be forced to withdraw from the occupied territories peacefully.

“Instead, there were conversations along the lines of: ‘What if they hit with a nuclear missile?’, ‘Maybe we should sit down at the negotiating table?’, ‘Can we convince Russia to withdraw from Ukrainian lands?’ — all of this only hindered support and played into Moscow’s hands,” he summarized.

As a reminder, NATO is discussing a more decisive response to Russia’s provocative actions, including the possibility of deploying strike drones near the Russian border and changing the rules for opening fire on Russian aircraft.

As reported, Russia has intensified its covert and overt attacks on Europe and entered the “zero” phase of preparation for war with NATO, which involves creating an information and psychological state.

Also follow “Pryamim” on Facebook , Twitter , Telegram , and Instagram.

Former US Army Europe commander General Ben Hodges has said that if Russia were to go to war against a NATO member, the military response would be immediate and devastating.
