Not long ago, the idea of drones taking down ballistic weapons seemed like a fantasy. But the future is arriving faster than expected. Ukrainian forces have now found a way to counter Russia\u2019s infamous KABs \u2014 using drones. Yes, drones.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This was announced to journalists in Brussels by Colonel Valeriy Vyshnevsky, Senior National Representative of Ukraine at JA TEC (Joint Analysis, Training and Education Centre) and Director of Program Implementation at the NATO\u2013Ukraine Joint Centre.<\/p>\n

According to him, in March, at the level of the Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the issue of countering enemy KABs was formally identified as a critical problem. As is well known, these guided aerial bombs (KABs) pose a serious threat \u2014 both to frontline positions and to civilians living in front-line settlements.<\/p>\n

NATO has a mechanism known as the Innovation Challenge<\/em> \u2014 a tool the Alliance turns to when it is unable to find a viable solution to a specific threat or challenge within a year. Russian KABs have now officially been designated as such a challenge.<\/p>\n\n

Experts identified scenarios for using CBMs on the battlefield and the desired outcomes for countering these bombs. Forty companies from NATO member states immediately offered solutions. JA TEC specialists held a competition that identified three companies with the best proposals.<\/p>\n

All three companies are already registered as joint ventures; their names have not been disclosed.<\/p>\n

According to Vishnevsky, an interceptor drone, a swarm of drones, and artificial intelligence capable of guiding a drone to its target have been obtained. The technology is already fairly effective against Shahed-type drones. Its application against enemy KABs requires further development, but final tests are planned for October 20 in France, when a glide bomb will be launched and drones will be deployed against it.<\/p>\n

If the technology proves effective, Ukraine may decide to adopt it into service.<\/p>\n
