Shakhtar FC has launched an internal investigation into the behavior of its player and national team player Yefim Konoply on social media following accusations of supporting Russian content. The scandal erupted after users noticed the player’s numerous likes on pro-Russian TikTok videos, including videos featuring the infamous former Russian politician Vladimir Zhirinovsky, who has since died.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The new scandal was reported by<\/a> military correspondent Bohdan Miroshnikov on Telegram.<\/p>\n

“So we checked the information. And we found a bunch of likes under Russian and pro-Russian videos on TikTok. He did it absolutely deliberately,” the journalist writes.<\/p>\n

In his opinion, the problem is much more serious than a few likes. “It seems to me that the problem here is deeper than just likes. It’s a worldview,” Miroshnikov emphasized.<\/p>\n

He also questioned the advisability of calling such players to the national team, especially during a war.<\/p>\n

“I don’t think that during a full-scale war with the Russian Federation, football players who like content related to the Russian Federation or produced in the Russian Federation should be called up to the national team,” his post says.<\/p>\n

The journalist gave examples of content that received support from Konoply. The photo shows a like from a football player under a video where Zhirinovsky trolls US dollars.<\/p>\n\t

“Footballer of the Ukrainian national team and Donetsk “Shakhtar” Yefim Konoplya likes videos with Zhirinovsky on TikTok. The video talks about a “dirty green piece of paper” – obviously, a hint at the US dollar, in which Mr. Yefim receives his salary,” adds Miroshnikov.<\/p>\n

In addition, the journalist pointed out that this is not the first case. Earlier, Konoplya liked a video about the Russian metro.<\/p>\n\t

“I thought the situation with Dynamo Kyiv’s Wyatt Blenutsya was the bottom, but here they knocked. Because even though he is not Ukrainian, Konoplya is not just Ukrainian, but also a representative of the national team, who represents Ukraine on the international stage!”, – Miroshnikov emphasized.<\/p>\n

The journalist also criticized the football player’s attempts to justify himself. He said that Konoplya simply couldn’t help but know who Zhirinovsky was.<\/p>\n

“Excuses that he doesn’t know who Zhirinovsky is are not accepted,” the military correspondent emphasized.<\/p>\n

According to Miroshnikov, this story indicates serious gaps in the basic knowledge of athletes.<\/p>\n

“PS, when will our football players be given courses in history, civics, and media literacy? Obviously, they didn’t teach all this in school,” he added.<\/p>\n

The club has already reacted to the situation. Shakhtar’s Director of Strategic Development and Communications Yuriy Svirydov, in an exclusive comment<\/a> to Champion, stated that the team is aware of Yukhim Konoply’s activity on social media. According to him, the club has launched an internal investigation to find out all the details of the incident, and after receiving the results, it will publicly inform fans and society about them.<\/p>\n

“We are informed about the situation regarding the activity of Yukhym Konoply on social networks. The club has already launched an internal investigation to clarify all the circumstances. After receiving the results, we will openly inform the fans and the public about them,” he noted.<\/p>\n

Later, Yefim Konoplya himself published his own statement on social media. He emphasized that information on the Internet should be verified.<\/p>\n

“As a person who represents Ukraine and does everything possible to support it in the war with Russia, it is strange for me to hear such accusations against me. I consider myself a patriot of our state, and true Ukrainians will be able to distinguish truth from lies. I ask you to check the information that is being spread on social networks. Thank you for your attention and I hope for your support and understanding,” the football player noted.<\/p>\n\t

Now an official reaction from the Ukrainian Football Association (UAF) is expected.<\/p>\n
