On October 16, EP committees approved projects that provide for the European Union to completely abandon imports of Russian gas and oil from January 1, 2026. This decision is aimed at stopping the Kremlin from using energy resources as a means of political pressure on Europe.

This is stated in a statement from the press service of the European Parliament.

It is noted that this is a ban on the import of any gas from Russia, including liquefied natural gas. Exceptions will apply only to current short-term contracts until June 17, 2025 and long-term contracts until January 1, 2027, if they were concluded before this date. Operators will have the right to terminate agreements, citing force majeure in the form of a legislative ban on imports.

The document also proposes to ban the storage of Russian gas in the EU from 2026 and oblige energy companies to provide detailed data on the country of origin of the raw materials. From the same date, a ban on the import of all types of Russian oil and petroleum products will come into effect, as well as strengthened control mechanisms and penalties for attempts to circumvent the restrictions.

Separately, the deputies removed the provision that would have allowed the European Commission to temporarily suspend the embargo in the event of a threat to energy security. The project was supported by 83 committee members, nine opposed, and one abstained.

The European Parliament explained that the decision was made due to Russia’s systematic use of its energy resources as a tool of pressure over the past two decades – a practice that has particularly intensified after the full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

As a reminder, the European Union seeks to abandon the purchase of Russian liquefied natural gas earlier than planned within the framework of the 19th package of sanctions against Russia.

Trump previously stated that he was ready to impose “serious sanctions” against Russia , but would do so only if NATO member countries refused to buy Russian raw materials.

Also follow “Pryamim” on Facebook , Twitter , Telegram , and Instagram .

The European Parliament is taking a step towards complete energy isolation of Russia.
