The European Union’s current sanctions against the Russian leadership do not include an entry ban for Russian President Vladimir Putin and Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, so this does not prevent Putin from meeting with Donald Trump in Budapest.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This was stated by the European Commission’s spokesperson for foreign policy, Anita Gipper, as reported by European Pravda.<\/p>\n

At the briefing, journalists asked whether the agreement to hold a meeting between the leaders of the EU sanctions regime was inconsistent. Gipper clarified that Putin and Lavrov are subject to asset freezes, but not travel bans.<\/p>\n

“Putin and Lavrov are subject to asset freeze sanctions, but not travel bans. So this doesn’t apply to them… The meeting hasn’t been confirmed yet, and we won’t comment on hypothetical scenarios. But if it does happen, it will be strictly based on the facts\u2014they are not banned from entering,” the spokesperson noted.<\/p>\n

At the same time, she stressed that for the plane carrying Putin to fly through closed EU airspace, individual member states must grant a special exemption.<\/p>\n

Deputy Chief Representative of the European Commission Olof Gill added that the EC welcomes any initiatives that could contribute to a just and sustainable peace in Ukraine.<\/p>\n

“If this expected meeting moves things in that direction, that will be positive,” he said.<\/p>\n\t\t
