Prime Minister Robert Fico stated this during a meeting with Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko on October 17 in Kosice. The talks between the government officials covered a wide range of issues, from energy and defense cooperation to labor migration, sanctions and frozen Russian assets.

The key outcome was Slovakia’s promise to support Ukraine’s accession to the EU.

“We spoke about our negative views, although we respect the Ukrainian people and NATO membership. On the other hand, we clearly and firmly say ‘yes’ to European ambitions related to membership in the European Union. We are ready to share all our experience,” Fico emphasized.

According to Svyrydenko, special attention during the negotiations was paid to strengthening energy security.

“Our energy teams have achieved notable success. All our agreements are recorded in the roadmap. We appreciate your decision to allocate additional funds to support energy infrastructure and shelters,” she noted.

A separate topic was the issue of frozen Russian assets – Kyiv is counting on Bratislava’s support in using them to purchase weapons and rebuild Ukraine. The parties also discussed the possibility of strengthening sanctions against Russia.

Following the meeting, the governments signed a number of important documents. These include agreements on labor migration, technical and financial cooperation, the exchange of premises for diplomatic missions, and the modernization of border checkpoints.

“According to the protocol that we signed between the government of Slovakia and the government of Ukraine, a checkpoint between Uzhhorod and Vyshne-Niemetske will be expanded. We are already opening the pedestrian part of the checkpoint and increasing the cargo part,” said Deputy Head of the OP Oleksiy Kuleba.

The parties also agreed to open a Ukrainian school in Slovakia.

“We agreed that in the city with the largest Ukrainian community, namely children – Bratislava – we will work on creating a Ukrainian language school, Slovak, English, we have several such scenarios,” said the Minister of Education and Science of Ukraine, Oksen Lisovyi.

Robert Fico stressed that he seeks to maintain good neighborly relations with Ukraine, while maintaining dialogue with other countries, in particular with Russia. Despite different approaches, both prime ministers called the meeting constructive and were satisfied with its results.

Recall, it was previously reported that Slovakia has decided to provide Ukraine with additional financial assistance to strengthen energy infrastructure and arrange shelters, which will be especially important on the eve of the winter period.

Also follow “Pryamim” on Facebook , Twitter , Telegram , and Instagram .

Slovakia has assured Ukraine that it will not stand in the way of its European integration.
