On Friday, October 17, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy held a more than two-hour meeting with US President Donald Trump at the White House. The leaders discussed security guarantees for Ukraine, arms supplies, including Tomahawk missiles, and prospects for ending the war.<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Before the briefing, Zelenskyy held a telephone meeting with the leaders of the European countries of the Coalition of the Willing, including European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, the heads of state of the United Kingdom, Poland, Finland, and Norway, and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.<\/p>\n

Territorial issues<\/h3>\n

<\/p>\n

The Ukrainian President emphasized that the territorial issue remains “the most complex.” He stated that Russia seeks to occupy all of Ukraine and wants to conclude an agreement on the territories even before the ceasefire.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

“Our position is first a ceasefire, after which we must sit down at the negotiating table and discuss where we stand. This is the most important step,” Zelenskyy said.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

He added that Ukraine is ready for any format of negotiations if it truly brings peace closer.<\/p>\n

Air defense and long-range weapons<\/h3>\n

<\/p>\n

A separate section of the meeting was devoted to the supply of air defense systems and long-range weapons, particularly Tomahawk missiles. Zelenskyy noted that the United States understands Ukraine’s need for such systems.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

“We discussed Budapest, and President Trump shared his vision for dialogue with the Russian side. We count on his efforts to end the war,” the head of state added.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

According to him, Russia is wary of the possibility of providing Ukraine with Tomahawks, because it \u201crealizes what Ukraine can do with such weapons.\u201d<\/p>\n

Security guarantees<\/h3>\n

<\/p>\n

During the conversation, the parties also discussed security guarantees for Ukraine. Zelenskyy emphasized that Kyiv counts on the US for leadership on this issue.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

“We need guarantees because only the United States currently has direct dialogue with Russia. And only President Trump is capable of providing these guarantees,” he emphasized.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The president added that Ukraine is strengthening its defense capabilities, but needs help to counter ballistic missiles and restore the energy grid after attacks.<\/p>\n

Results<\/h3>\n

<\/p>\n

Zelensky noted that the meeting with Trump could “really bring the end of the war closer”:<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

“We discussed everything\u2014from the situation on the battlefield to diplomatic prospects. Russia must end the aggression it initiated. We are counting on US pressure.”<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

US President Donald Trump called his meeting with Zelensky “very interesting and warm” on the social media platform TruthSocial<\/em> .<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

“I told him, as I did President Putin: it’s time to stop the killing and make a deal! Enough bloodshed \u2013 the lines are drawn by war and courage. Let both declare victory,” Trump wrote.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

He also reiterated that this war would never have started if he had remained the US President.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

“Enough death, enough cost. Return to your families in peace,” the American leader concluded.<\/p>\n

As a reminder, Trump previously avoided a direct answer to the question of whether Ukraine should cede territory<\/a> to achieve peace with Russia.<\/p>\n

The American leader also stated that India has almost completely stopped purchasing Russian oil and will soon refuse to import it altogether<\/a> . <\/p>\n
