Consideration of the bill, which is supposed to introduce new large-scale sanctions against Russia and its trade allies, has been temporarily suspended.<\/strong><\/p>\n

According to<\/a> American media, the administration of US President Donald Trump wants to wait for the results of his upcoming meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin before making a final decision. The document envisages the possibility of imposing 500 percent tariffs on countries that continue to buy Russian oil.<\/p>\n

Senate Republican Leader John Thune confirmed that, despite broad bipartisan support for the initiative, its consideration has been suspended to avoid steps that could complicate diplomatic negotiations between Washington and Moscow, Politico<\/em> reports.<\/p>\n

“They probably consider it necessary to first see how the meeting with Putin goes in a few weeks,” the senator explained.<\/p>\n

Thune also said he is in constant contact with one of the bill’s co-sponsors, Senator Lindsey Graham, who is coordinating with the White House. According to Thune, Graham is currently working with the administration to see if an upcoming meeting can yield concrete results.<\/p>\n

Another Politico<\/em> source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed that the bill is effectively “frozen” until the Trump-Putin summit.<\/p>\n

This decision was a sharp change of position compared to the previous week, when Thune declared that “it is time to move on.” However, the same day, after a phone call with Putin, Trump publicly expressed doubts about the advisability of imposing new sanctions “at this stage.”<\/p>\n

The bill, which would impose high tariffs on Russian energy imports and secondary sanctions against companies that support Russia’s energy sector, has over 80 co-sponsors in the Senate, effectively overriding a potential presidential veto.<\/p>\n

Despite this, Republican leadership has decided not to move forward without explicit approval from the White House. Senators fear that advancing the initiative without the president’s support could put them in a difficult political position if Trump later decides to oppose the move.<\/p>\n
