The sources said the reasons given in the US included concerns about the potential consequences for global financial stability. Another source said the US simply did not want to make any additional commitments at this stage.

The US refusal was a significant blow to the European Union, which is actively promoting the idea of raising up to $140 billion euros for Ukraine by using assets frozen in the central banks of the G7 countries as collateral for loans. The European Commission is currently working on the mechanism for implementing this initiative, but the details are expected to be published only after the plan is approved at the EU summit in Brussels, which is due to take place at the end of the week.

At the same time, Brussels does not hide its disappointment with Washington’s reluctance to join the initiative at the final stage of preparation, especially given that the US has called on Europe to make more active use of frozen Russian resources.

Although only a small portion of such assets are held in American jurisdiction, US support would have important political significance and could encourage other countries to participate. It is currently known that the UK and Canada have already expressed their support for the European initiative, while Japan, according to journalists, is taking a more cautious stance and is likely to share the US’s reluctance.

As a reminder, the European Union, together with its allies, is preparing a political decision on using part of the frozen Russian reserves to finance aid to Ukraine . The United Kingdom and Canada have already declared their readiness to act synchronously with the EU.

As previously reported, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron, and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz agreed during a joint telephone conversation on the use of frozen Russian assets for the benefit of Ukraine .

Also follow “Pryamim” on Facebook , Twitter , Telegram , and Instagram.

Washington has decided not to support the European Union’s initiative to expand the use of frozen Russian assets to finance aid to Ukraine within the Group of Seven.
