One day, reports claim that “there is no need for a personal meeting between Rubio and Lavrov — everything has already been discussed” (while at the same time the meeting is supposedly still planned for October 30). Next, we hear that “the meeting between Trump and Putin has been postponed — there were no agreements at all, only preliminary discussions.”

Meanwhile, the Russian Foreign Ministry declares that Moscow will not agree to a ceasefire because “most of Ukraine would remain under Nazi rule.” In essence, this is an open statement of intent to occupy all of Ukraine, leaving no room for any peace deal.

At the same time, information has surfaced suggesting that Trump believes “the parties are not yet sufficiently prepared for a meeting at the highest level.”

“Back in the same boat”: why Trump still trusts Putin

Against this backdrop, the Russian State Duma has ratified a strategic partnership agreement with Venezuela. At the same time, Trump is sending troops to the Venezuelan coast, while Republicans are declaring that he will “overthrow Maduro as an illegitimate president.” It is hard to imagine Trump ignoring such an overt show of defiance — a challenge to his own claim to global leadership.

So, it seems clear that no meeting will take place. Either Putin is afraid, or Trump has no desire to listen to hours of vague, rambling explanations without any concrete commitments. After all, it is difficult to understand what the two could have discussed for two and a half hours without leaving any trace of results.

Meanwhile, Trump’s attention has shifted to Gaza — on the brink of another military escalation — and to Venezuela, where preparations for either a violent regime change or a direct intervention appear to be underway. Both situations are far more tangible and controllable than dealing with Putin’s inflated ambitions and chronic avoidance of responsibility.

It only remains to hope that Trump will finally realize that Putin is deceiving him again and again.
