Russian forces have reportedly begun using Igla man-portable anti-aircraft missile systems (MANPADS) mounted on attack helicopters to target Ukrainian long-range drones. Available photos show a Mi-28N helicopter with the Strelets system and four launchers, likely designed to counter UAVs.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The information and illustrations were published by<\/a> Defense Express, also citing footage distributed by Russian propaganda.<\/p>\n

The Russians have used helicopters against Ukrainian drones before, but most often used cannon weapons for this – a cheaper, but demanding method of destroying light aircraft. The transition to missile weapons means higher ammunition costs, but also, as experts note, a higher probability of hitting the target, especially in conditions of volley launch, which is provided by the “Archer”.<\/p>\n

At the same time, analysts draw attention to the difficulty of defeating small light-engine UAVs: they have a small thermal footprint and low visibility, so the effectiveness of older versions of MANPADS may have been limited. However, the launch characteristics of newer missiles make them more suitable for combating such targets, and this, according to Defense Express, explains the change in tactics on the Russian side.<\/p>\n

Recall that the analysis of the remains of downed Geran-2 (“Shahed”) attack UAVs indicates the serial use of new technological solutions by Russia.<\/a> These are Chinese-made mesh modems and built-in course cameras, which are probably used to guide the drones to the target in real time.<\/p>\n

As reported, the Main Intelligence Directorate has published a detailed analysis of the Russian U-series jet drone \u201cGeran-3\u201d. A 3D model and a list of components, from the engine to the navigation system, have appeared on the War&Sanctions portal<\/a> . The device is assembled mainly from foreign components, including parts from the USA, China and Europe. The intelligence also explains how exactly the \u201cGeran-3\u201d operates in the air defense zone and why it is difficult to disable it.<\/p>\n
