On the evening of October 23, a violation of the state border by Russian military aircraft was recorded over the territory of Lithuania. The incident was commented on by the country’s President Gitanas Nauseda.<\/strong><\/p>\n

He announced<\/a> this on the social network X.<\/p>\n

At around 6:00 p.m. local time, the Lithuanian Air Force recorded the intrusion of two Russian aircraft into the country’s airspace – a Su-30 fighter jet and an Il-78 tanker. The violation occurred near the city of Kybartai, located near the border with the Kaliningrad region.<\/p>\n

According to Nauseda, this incident is a “gross violation of international law and the territorial integrity of Lithuania” and demonstrates the need to strengthen the readiness of air defense systems in European countries.<\/p>\n

According to preliminary data, the planes were performing aerial refueling exercises over the Kaliningrad region and briefly crossed Lithuanian airspace \u2014 for about 18 seconds \u2014 flying about 700 meters deep into the territory.<\/p>\n

The Lithuanian Foreign Ministry has already announced its intention to summon representatives of the Russian embassy to deliver a note of protest, condemning the “dangerous and irresponsible behavior” of the Russian military.<\/p>\n

Two Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jets from the Spanish Air Force, which are carrying out a NATO air patrol mission in the Baltic region, were scrambled immediately after the incident. The aircraft continue to monitor the situation in the incident area.<\/p>\n

Recall thatNATO can shoot down Russian planes if they pose a threat to alliance countries<\/a> . If there is no threat, the planes will simply be intercepted and removed from NATO airspace.<\/p>\n
