Former Commander-in-Chief of the Lithuanian Armed Forces Jonas Vytautas Zukas said that former German Chancellor Angela Merkel allegedly obstructed the Ukrainian authorities during the occupation of Crimea in 2014. According to him, Merkel influenced Kyiv’s position on the defense of the Supreme Rada of Crimea.<\/strong><\/p>\n

In his book, Zukas described how the Ukrainian leadership refrained from a military response during the occupation of Crimea, allegedly at Merkel’s request. He noted that at the time he was in Kyiv as commander-in-chief of the Lithuanian army and had a meeting with acting Ukrainian President Oleksandr Turchynov.<\/p>\n

When asked about the reasons for the lack of resistance during the seizure of the parliament building in Crimea, Zukas recalled Turchynov’s words: “He told me that it was Merkel’s request in a telephone conversation.”<\/p>\n

Journalists asked a spokeswoman for Angela Merkel’s office for comment. In response, she noted: “We do not comment on individual expressions of opinion.”<\/p>\n

She also emphasized that all of Merkel’s official positions are set out in her public interviews and memoirs “Svoboda”, published in 2024. The publication recalls that the attitude towards Merkel in Eastern European countries has always been ambiguous. Her support for the construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline after the occupation of Crimea has provoked sharp criticism from Poland and the Baltic countries.<\/p>\n

According to analysts, Merkel’s reputation in Eastern European countries has been completely destroyed since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, with the publication noting that she is now perceived as one of the least popular political figures in the region.<\/p>\n

It was previously reported that three years before the annexation of Crimea, Germany was training the Russian army in modern combat tactics<\/a> and planned to create a network of combat training centers on the territory of the Russian Federation. Cooperation between Berlin and Moscow began in 2011 and was worth about one billion euros, but was stopped after the start of Russian aggression against Ukraine in 2014.<\/p>\n
