At the same time, according to the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, only 15 mines are currently operating in the occupied territories, noted military serviceman and former journalist Yevhen Shybalov.

Experts from the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine estimate the real number of operating mines even lower — only seven . The difference is explained by the fact that exploration counts all operating enterprises, while scientists count only those that are engaged in mining.

According to Shibalov, half of the mines now operate only as underground water pumps. He emphasized: “The fact of the death of coal mining as an industry is undeniable.”

Even before the occupation, experts warned of a possible decline. Russia was actively closing mines on its territory and had a surplus of coal on the domestic market. It did not invest in the captured enterprises.

Shibalov cited the example of Donetsk in the Rostov region of the Russian Federation, where total poverty reigned after the mass closure of mines. According to him, the prospects for the development of the coal industry in the occupied territories of Donbas were obvious back in 2014.

Russia’s occupation of part of Donbas led not only to the decline of the coal industry, but also to the destruction of other industries that relied on local minerals. This put an end to the industrial history of the region.

We will remind you that the Russian army has converted mines in temporarily occupied Bakhmut, Donetsk region, for military needs and placed ammunition depots and field hospitals there.

It was previously reported that in the city of Khrustalne, Luhansk region, captured by Russian troops , the invaders closed all mines.

Also follow “Pryamim” on Facebook , Twitter , Telegram , and Instagram.

Russia’s occupation of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions led to a catastrophic reduction in the number of operating mines: from 114, only 15 remained.
