The US, in its new package of sanctions, has hit not only oil giants Rosneft and Lukoil, but also their subsidiaries. At the same time, Rosneft’s German unit managed to avoid restrictions.<\/strong><\/p>\n

German Economy Minister Katharina Reich has explained that Rosneft Germany is not subject to new US energy sanctions because the company is no longer controlled by Moscow. As Reuters reports<\/a> , the US government confirmed this in a letter to Berlin, stressing that the activities of the German branch are completely separate from the Russian parent structure.<\/p>\n

Rosneft Germany owns, in particular, the large PCK Schwedt oil refinery, which provides over 12% of all fuel processing capacity in Germany and is one of the key employers in the federal state of Brandenburg.<\/p>\n

What could happen if sanctions were to be extended?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

After the US sanctions were passed, Berlin made an official request to Washington regarding Rosneft Germany, as the new rules prohibit Western companies and banks from working with companies on the sanctions list. This could have paralyzed the activities of the German \u201csubsidiary\u201d of the Russian corporation.<\/p>\n

According<\/a> to Bloomberg, due to the threat of sanctions, major oil traders, banks and energy companies have warned of the possibility of severing cooperation with Rosneft Deutschland. To avoid this, the German government urgently held talks with the United States, after which Washington agreed to remove the company from the sanctions list, recognizing it as completely independent of Russian influence.<\/p>\n

Recall that recently, the Donald Trump administration announced the first major package of financial restrictions aimed at the Russian economy<\/a> . This move became part of Washington’s new strategy, the aim of which is to force the Kremlin to stop the war against Ukraine. The sanctions included oil giants Rosneft and Lukoil.<\/p>\n

Soon, Russian oil giant Lukoil announced plans to sell its foreign assets<\/a> in response to sanctions imposed against the company and its subsidiaries by the United States and other states.<\/p>\n
