A shootout between law enforcement officers and local drug traffickers has broken out in the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro, killing at least 60 people.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This<\/span>was reported<\/span><\/a> in The Gurdian.<\/span><\/p>\n

More than 2,500 officers and special forces raided the Aleman and Pe\u00f1a favelas, home to an estimated 300,000 people, sparking fierce gunfire.<\/span><\/p>\n

In particular, drug traffickers from the Red Team group began shooting, setting barricades and cars on fire. They also used drones to drop explosives on special forces.<\/span><\/p>\n

The death toll is currently at 60, but the toll could rise. In addition, eight police officers and four local residents were injured.<\/span><\/p>\n

Rio de Janeiro Governor Claudio Castro declared the city to be in a “state of war.”<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThis is no longer an ordinary crime, this is narco-terrorism,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n

The official added that this was the largest police operation since 2010. During it, more than 80 people were detained and more than 40 automatic rifles were seized.<\/span><\/p>\n

According to Castro, police in the city are currently on high alert due to fears that drug lords may order attacks in retaliation.<\/span><\/p>\n
