Space is becoming a key element of the EU’s defence strategy. European Commissioner for Defence and Space Andrius Kubilius said that the protection and use of space for defence is becoming increasingly relevant due to the already existing attacks in space.<\/strong><\/p>\n

According to<\/a> Kubilius, space is one of the priorities for Europe and central to the recently presented defense readiness roadmap.<\/p>\n

“We need to be ready by 2030, because Putin may try to test NATO’s Article 5. Without space capabilities, defense readiness is impossible, and we are not ready yet,” the commissioner noted.<\/p>\n

He stressed that satellites play a crucial role on the modern battlefield. In Ukraine, they help coordinate strikes and control drones, ensuring effective defense. At the same time, Russia is developing laser weapons capable of disabling satellites, and German aircraft are under the sights of Russian reconnaissance satellites.<\/p>\n

In its roadmap, the European Commission proposes not only to defend space, but also to actively use it for defense by creating the European Space Defense Shield, the launch of which is scheduled for next summer.<\/p>\n

Kubilius explained that modern warfare requires:<\/p>\n

secure intelligence and surveillance;<\/p>\n

safe positioning and navigation;<\/p>\n

secure communication.<\/p>\n

“We will use space to gain these critical capabilities,” he concluded.<\/p>\n

As a reminder, French General Vincent Choussot has announced a sharp increase in \u201chostile or unfriendly\u201d activity in space, especially from Russia<\/a> . According to him, satellite systems are increasingly becoming targets of sabotage.<\/p>\n

As reported, NATO has expressed concern that Russia may place its nuclear weapons in space.<\/a><\/p>\n

By the way, the European Commission officially addressed the EU Council with a proposal to start negotiations on Ukraine’s accession to the government satellite communication segment Govsatcom and participation in the European Union’s IRIS\u00b2 Secure Space Connectivity Program.<\/a><\/p>\n
