In the 2025 snap Dutch parliamentary elections, the centrist D66 party has made a significant gain, while Geert Wilders’ far-right forces have suffered significant losses. Preliminary results, published by the ANP agency after 50% of the votes have been counted, show D66 winning 27 seats in the 150-seat parliament, while Wilders’ Freedom Party has won 25, losing 12 seats compared to the previous election.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The result paves the way for D66 leader Rob Yetten to form a coalition government and potentially become prime minister. The centrists have enough seats to form both a center-left and center-right alliance. Most of the major parties have already announced that they will not cooperate with Wilders, effectively eliminating his chance to lead the government again.<\/p>\n

\u201cMillions of citizens voted to turn the page on the politics of negativity and hate,\u201d Yetten said in an address to supporters.<\/p>\n

Why is this important for Ukraine?<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Netherlands has traditionally taken a tough stance on EU enlargement policy. In the fall, Prime Minister Dick Schof rejected the idea of changing the EU’s decision-making rules to bypass the Hungarian veto and speed up accession talks with Ukraine. Experts say that the Netherlands should not be expected to give unwavering support to Ukraine’s European integration, even if the previous coalition had not collapsed.<\/p>\n

If Wilders comes to power, the situation may seem complicated due to his previous sympathies for the Kremlin. However, after the full-scale Russian invasion, his rhetoric became more cautious. Wilders recognized Ukraine’s right to self-defense and condemned Russian aggression, and his party, even participating in the coalition, did not interfere with supporting Kyiv.<\/p>\n

Analysts note that Wilders will have to look for allies among moderate parties, so Ukraine can still count on dialogue and pragmatic support.<\/p>\n

Forming a new government could take months due to the Netherlands’ complex political system, where a majority in parliament requires at least 76 seats and usually requires three to four parties to form a coalition. Official confirmation of the results is expected on November 7.<\/p>\n

As a reminder, Dutch Foreign Minister David van Wiel, during his visit to Kyiv, announced the allocation of 25 million euros to support the Ukrainian energy sector.<\/a><\/p>\n

As reported,the Dutch government will soon finance a new support package for Ukraine in the amount of 90 million euros to develop its own production of reconnaissance and strike drones.<\/a><\/p>\n
