Security Service of Ukraine officers detained a Russian FSB agent in Kharkiv who was manufacturing a homemade explosive device and planning to detonate it in the city.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Security Service of Ukraine reported<\/a> this.<\/p>\n

The perpetrator turned out to be a local resident, previously convicted of participating in the attempted seizure of the Kharkiv Regional State Administration building in 2014. The court then sentenced him to five years in prison with a three-year probationary period.<\/p>\n

It was during this period that an FSB officer contacted him, recruited him, and transferred him to so-called standby mode.<\/p>\n

“This fall, the occupiers activated their agent via instant messaging and instructed him to manufacture an improvised explosive device. After completing the work, he was to plant the bomb at coordinates he would receive from his Russian handler,” the SBU reported.<\/p>\n

During a search of the detainee’s home, security forces discovered unfinished explosives, their components, and a smartphone in the act of being used by the occupiers.<\/p>\n

The perpetrator has already been served with a notice of suspicion under Part 1 of Article 14 and Part 2 of Article 258 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (preparation for a terrorist act by prior conspiracy by a group of persons). The court has ordered pretrial detention without bail.<\/p>\n

The defendant faces up to 12 years in prison with confiscation of property.<\/p>\n

The SBU is also considering the possibility of additional qualifications for his actions.<\/p>\n

Previously , the SBU exposed a spy couple who were collecting data on a defense plant in southern Ukraine<\/a> . The female agent and her partner were attempting to obtain classified information to pass on to Russian intelligence services.<\/p>\n
