Powerful Hurricane Melissa has hit Jamaica and Haiti, causing catastrophic damage and the death of at least 50 people. Total economic losses are estimated at more than $48 billion.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Within days of the disaster, the scale of the devastation in the region became apparent. According to Brian Bogart, the director of the World Food Programme in the Caribbean, the situation in the affected areas is “apocalyptic.”<\/p>\n

“It’s like a bomb went off in this community; people are sleeping on the streets, there’s complete destruction. There’s widespread psychological stress,” he said after visiting the town of Black River in southwestern Jamaica.<\/p>\n

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies says it will take years to recover from the disaster. At least 19 people have died in Jamaica, with dozens more missing.<\/p>\n

Heavy rains in Haiti have caused widespread flooding and landslides, killing at least 30 people, as authorities continue search and rescue operations in remote areas.<\/p>\n

Only material damage was recorded in Cuba and the Bahamas. At the same time, the hurricane is gradually losing strength and has become a category one.<\/p>\n

Local media reported that Melissa left more than 19,000 homes without power in Bermuda. Roads remain blocked in several areas of Jamaica, including the tourist area of Holland Bamboo Avenue, where bamboo poles blocked traffic.<\/p>\n

According to estimates from the AccuWeather weather service, total damages from the hurricane could reach between $48 billion and $52 billion.<\/p>\n
