Formally, the restrictions are explained by “protecting food security”, however, according to the assessment of Ukrainian intelligence, it indicates a serious deepening of the crisis processes in the Russian chemical industry.

All major forms of the substance — liquid, granular, and lump sulfur — were banned.

Despite its status as one of the world’s leading producers, Russia has reduced its production of technical sulfur by 11.2% to 3.17 million tons since the beginning of the year. The reason was a decrease in the volume of oil and gas processing, which are the main sources of its production.

Due to a domestic deficit, Russia was forced to purchase about 35,000 tons of sulfur in October at a price of $390 per ton. This indicates an increase in dependence on imports and an increase in the cost of fertilizer production.

Analysts predict that under current trends, the sulfur shortage could become a systemic factor that will limit the development of the Russian chemical industry and reduce exporters’ foreign exchange earnings.

As a reminder, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that as a result of international sanctions, Russia will have a budget deficit of at least $100 billion in 2026, and according to optimistic forecasts, up to $130 billion.

As reported, Ukrainian special services have carried out nearly 160 successful attacks on Russia’s oil infrastructure since the beginning of the year. These attacks have left about 37% of oil refining capacity idle, causing fuel shortages in 57 regions of the Russian Federation and forcing the Russian authorities to ban gasoline exports until the end of the year.

Also follow “Pryamim” on Facebook , Twitter , Telegram , and Instagram.

Amid the decline in oil and gas refining, Russian enterprises can no longer meet their own needs for technical sulfur, an important raw material for chemical production.
