Climatologists warn that traditional snowy winters are a thing of the past.

Former head of the Ukrhydrometeorological Center Mykola Kulbida says that the climate in Ukraine has finally changed:

“We can no longer imagine a long cold winter. There is simply no climatic reason for this,” the meteorologist emphasizes.

According to him, the snow cover in most regions will be unstable – it will appear and disappear. In the west of the country, precipitation is traditionally higher, but even there the snow will not last long.

Experts from the Ministry of Environmental Protection confirm that winter frosts and blizzards are becoming rare. If winter was previously associated with frosts and snowdrifts, now it increasingly resembles late autumn or early spring.

Svitlana Krakowska, head of the Applied Climatology Laboratory of the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Institute, explains that over the past 60 years, the average temperature in Ukraine has increased almost 2.5 times faster than in the world as a whole.

“The main warming occurs precisely in the winter period. In Kyiv, climatic winter has not been recorded for three years in a row, as the average temperature remains above zero,” the climatologist noted.

According to her, sharp fluctuations have become characteristic now, from thaws to short-term but severe frosts. Such fluctuations are also a consequence of climate change.

The lack of snow has consequences not only for skiers and winter holidaymakers. The snowpack is an important source of moisture for the soil, ensuring fertility and stable yields. Its absence can lead to soil dehydration and a drop in yield.

In addition, snow protects plants from frost, and without it, the roots of many crops can freeze. Warm winters also affect animals that hibernate – badgers, bears, hedgehogs wake up earlier due to frequent thaws.

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment emphasizes that snow is not just a decoration for holidays, but an important element of the ecosystem that keeps soils from erosion and replenishes aquifers. Its disappearance increases the risks of spring floods and threatens the country’s water balance.

Scientists agree on one thing: mild winters are now the new climate reality for Ukraine. Without decisive steps to reduce the impact of global warming, it will be impossible to return to “winter with snow.”

“The climate has changed — and we will have to change with it,” meteorologists conclude.

As a reminder, former head of the Ukrhydrometeorological Center Mykola Kulbida said that the winter of 2025–2026 in Ukraine will likely be mild and short, without prolonged frosts and heavy snowfalls. At the same time, short but noticeable periods of cooling are expected.

At the same time, Honored Meteorologist of Ukraine Vazira Martazinova shared that the winter of 2026 in Ukraine may be one of the coldest in recent years . According to experts, the upcoming winter season promises to be unstable and rich in weather contrasts.

By the way, in November, Ukraine will be covered by heavy precipitation, and by the end of the month, the first serious snowfall should be expected.

Also follow “Pryamim” on Facebook , Twitter , Telegram , and Instagram .

This winter, Ukrainians are facing unstable weather without long-lasting frosts and with snow that will melt faster than it will form a stable cover.
