Following Russia’s combined attack on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure on the night of November 8, the Khmelnytskyi and Rivne nuclear power plants were forced to reduce electricity production due to damage to distribution substations. The IAEA stressed that the situation poses a threat to the stability of the energy system and nuclear safety.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This was reported by the press service<\/a> of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).<\/p>\n

The agency said in a statement that two Ukrainian nuclear power plants reduced generation after the attack, as damage to substations made it difficult to connect to the grid. Last week, the Rivne nuclear power plant also temporarily reduced production after another substation, important for the safe operation of the facility, was hit.<\/p>\n

IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi stressed the danger of such incidents.<\/p>\n

“Electrical substations are critical to our efforts to maintain nuclear security during wartime. Their continued degradation is deeply concerning in this regard. I continue to call for maximum military restraint to maintain nuclear security and avoid an accident with serious radiological consequences,” Grossi said.<\/p>\n

The IAEA emphasized that recent events demonstrate the unstable situation with nuclear safety in Ukraine against the backdrop of the ongoing war.<\/p>\n

The day before, Ukraine’s Foreign Minister called for an urgent meeting of the IAEA Board of Governors. He stressed that Russian strikes near nuclear facilities are part of Moscow’s deliberate strategy and pose a direct threat to the security of not only Ukraine, but all of Europe.<\/p>\n

Recall that a massive missile and drone strike caused significant damage to the thermal power plants of PJSC “Centrenergo”<\/a> , as a result of which the generating capacity of the enterprise was completely stopped. Restoration teams are working to eliminate the consequences, but currently there is no electricity production at the stations.<\/p>\n

Earlier, a blackout occurred at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant<\/a> due to Russian shelling of energy facilities in Slavutych.<\/p>\n

The day before, on the night of September 26, an explosion was recorded in the area near the South Ukrainian Nuclear Power Plant<\/a> – a drone that approached the perimeter of the plant was shot down less than a kilometer from the strategic facility.<\/p>\n
