More than $5 billion in American weapons shipments to NATO allies and Ukraine are being delayed by a prolonged U.S. government shutdown. The shutdown has affected arms sales procedures and the operations of federal agencies.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Journalists say the delay is the result of massive unpaid leave for civil servants and the suspension of programs that provide military support. According to a senior US State Department official, the situation is hurting both America’s allies and partners and its own defense industry, which supplies critical weapons abroad.<\/p>\n

The supply of AMRAAM missiles, Aegis combat systems, and HIMARS systems to Denmark, Croatia, and Poland is under threat. Although the ultimate destination of these supplies is not specified, arms sales to allies are often used to further aid Ukraine.<\/p>\n

The pending deals include both government arms sales and export licenses for private U.S. defense companies. These processes are usually straightforward, but the Arms Export Control Act requires congressional approval.<\/p>\n

At the same time, the shutdown has put most State Department staff who work with congressional committees on unpaid leave, making it impossible to make quick decisions. Last month, the Bureau of Political-Military Affairs was operating at only a quarter of its normal capacity.<\/p>\n

The US federal government partially shut down on the night of October 1, 2025, after a failed budget funding vote. The shutdown disrupted key government agencies, slowed air travel and domestic tourism. The main reason for the disagreement between Republicans and Democrats was the dispute over the extension of subsidies under the Affordable Care Act, known as Obamacare.<\/p>\n

The current shutdown has been going on for 40 days, surpassing the previous record of 35 days, which was set during Donald Trump’s first presidential term in 2018\u20132019.<\/p>\n
