The war with Russia has led to the resurgence of diseases long thought to be extinct. Ukrainian doctors are reporting cases of gas gangrene, a deadly bacterial infection that destroys muscles in a matter of days.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Doctors say modern trench warfare and Russian drone attacks have made it difficult to evacuate the wounded from the front. This has forced soldiers to remain in underground bunkers and field posts, leading to the rapid spread of infections. Doctors are recording cases of gas gangrene at a rate not seen since World War II.<\/p>\n

Gas gangrene is caused by Clostridium bacteria that multiply in necrotic tissue without oxygen. The infection causes severe pain, swelling, skin discoloration, and gas bubbles under the skin that create a characteristic cracking sound.<\/p>\n

“We are receiving wounded people who were injured a few weeks ago and were left in underground stabilization points, where we are trying to save their lives,” said one of the doctors.<\/p>\n

Treatment for gas gangrene requires surgical removal of infected tissue and administration of strong antibiotics. Without timely care, mortality is almost 100%. In wartime, this is often impossible – access to hospitals is limited, and the delivery of medicine and evacuation is complicated by constant shelling.<\/p>\n

Historically, gas gangrene was associated with the trenches of World War I, when soldiers encountered dirt, pus, and a lack of antibiotics. Today, Russian aggression is creating similar conditions in Ukraine\u2014modern injuries and delays in medical care are bringing deadly infections back to the battlefield.<\/p>\n

“The war with Russia not only takes lives on the front, but also creates conditions for deadly diseases that we have long considered history,” the doctor notes.<\/p>\n
